Minority Health Awareness Month
April is National Minority Health Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about health disparities that continue to affect people from racial and ethnic minority groups and encourage action through health education, early detection, and control of disease complications.
Here are some statistics regarding minority health disparities:
-African Americans have the highest death rate and shortest survival rate of most cancers
-Hispanic and African American women who get breast cancer are more likely to be diagnosed at a later stage than white women
-African Americans are 1.4x more likely to have high blood pressure than whites
-African Americans are much more likely than people in other racial/ethnic groups to die from heart disease and stroke
-Hispanics are 1.7x more likely to have diabetes than whites
-American Indians and Alaksa Natives are twice as likely as non-hispanic white of similar age to have diabetes
-Infant mortality rates are higher amongst African Americans, American Indians, and Alaka Natives
